Church Membership

Although Scripture does not contain an explicit command to formally join a local church, the biblical foundation for church membership can be found in the New Testament in:

  1. The example of the early church – Acts 2:38; 42
  2. The existence of church government – Acts 20:28; 1 Peter 5:2
  3. The exercise of church discipline – Matthew 15:18-20
  4. The exhortation to mutual edification – Hebrews 10:24-25; 1 Peter 4:10-11

Living out a commitment to a local church involves many responsibilities such as:

  • Exemplifying a godly lifestyle in the community and wider society
  • Exercising one’s spiritual gifts in diligent service
  • Contributing financially to the work of the ministry
  • Giving and receiving admonishment with meekness and in love
  • Faithfully participating in corporate worship

Much is expected, but much is at stake. For only when every believer is faithful to this kind of commitment is the church able to live up to its calling as Christ’s representative here on earth. To put it simply, membership matters.

We do not believe in membership for the sake of increasing numbers.  Members are not only actively involved in the life and activities of the church but play a fundamental role in assisting in shaping the pattern of the church’s work and witness.

Becoming a member of Rhema Christian Ministries publicly shows that you have chosen to identify with this local community of believers; agree with its core values; are committed to its work/vision (Ephesians 2:19; Romans 12:5); recognise and believe that you, as a Christian, have a contribution to make in the life of the church and the building of the ministry.
